BOOK REVIEW
Stuttering and
Cluttering - Frameworks for Understanding and Treatment
David Ward. Published 2006
I am
delighted to be asked to review this book. Having got to
know David really
well through Stammer Trust Meetings (and watched him leg
it around the Rounder’s pitch each year) it is wonderful
to see this work in print.
The
book provides a thorough and comprehensive description
of the theories and treatments of disorders of fluency.
Part 1 looks at
aetiology and there are different chapters devoted to
for example stuttering and motor
speech control; also stuttering and language processing.
Part 2 of the book
examines approaches to treatment- in young children,
school age children and also adults.
I
have experience of working with people who stammer
(stammering and stuttering are used interchangeably) but
the book is written to inform and whet the appetite of
clinicians who want to begin to develop their
skills….and it is rich in information for experienced
Speech and language therapists too.
The
book is clearly written and easy to read –whether you
read a chapter completely or you just dip into it.
I
particularly liked the ‘Key Points’ summary at the end
of each chapter alongside further reading suggestions.
(I am a terrible speed reader so that format suits me
very well!!)
There is a great deal of practical guidance and also for
me the chapter on acquired stuttering was extremely
helpful. And HURRAH –a chapter on cluttering.
I
have found many books on stuttering to be one
dimensional –David’s book is balanced, informative and
stimulating.
It
is absolutely great to have this up to date book by a
British Speech and Language therapist ……….and working at
the Apple House along side Polly.
I
note a comment from Carolyn Cheasman SLT at the City Lit
in London – she describes the book as a
‘magnificent achievement’.
I
agree and it is a terrific asset to my
resources…………thank you David.
